Identify the material before choosing a vacuum
“Workshop dust” can mean ordinary debris, wood dust, drywall dust, metal particles or hazardous material. Those are different applications. Establish what you need to collect, then use equipment and a configuration specifically permitted for that material and task.
This guide compares manufacturer information checked on 30 September 2026. We have not tested pickup, dust containment, runtime, noise or long-term durability. A household stick vacuum’s dust illumination or filtration claim does not establish suitability for sanding, concrete, combustible dust or hazardous-material cleanup.
Separate cleanup from tool-source extraction
Floor and bench cleanup after work is different from capturing dust as a saw or sander generates it. Source extraction needs the tool manufacturer’s required hose, airflow, configuration and controls. A convenient battery vacuum is not automatically an acceptable complete extraction system.
For hazardous dust or regulated work, follow the applicable material, equipment and task requirements. A HEPA filter alone does not certify every machine configuration or the entire work method. Do not infer safety from an attachment fitting the tool port.
Four identified portable candidates
| Model | Manufacturer-documented configuration | Purchase check |
|---|---|---|
| Makita XCV11Z | 18V LXT, two-gallon portable wet/dry vacuum with HEPA filter, tool-only model | Battery and charger package, permitted materials and filter setup |
| Milwaukee 0970-20 | M18 FUEL, 2.5-gallon wet/dry vacuum with PACKOUT compatibility and included HEPA filter | Exact M18 package, hose/adapter arrangement and required filter or bags |
| DEWALT DCV581H | 20V MAX wet/dry worksite vacuum, cordless or AC power, tool-only | 2-gallon tank, 5-foot hose and supplied wet/dry HEPA filter; confirm battery/charger ownership, hose fit and the manual’s permitted materials |
| Milwaukee M18 FUEL NEXUS 0914-20 | Larger jobsite cleanup with wireless activation of compatible tools | 6-gallon tank and 1-7/8-inch hose; the supplied large high-efficiency filter is not described as the optional HEPA filter, so verify the filter and bag setup for your task |
These are differently sized tools, so a single overall winner would hide the decision: the Makita is a compact battery-only unit, the DEWALT also runs on AC power when a battery runs out, and the NEXUS offers more tank capacity at a larger storage footprint. These are manufacturer-published features, not measured comparisons, and the models are relevant examples rather than winners in an independent test. Search Amazon for Makita XCV11Z or Milwaukee 0970-20 , confirming the exact identity and included components. A similar kit or replacement part is not the base unit.
Match the filter and collection arrangement
Read the full model instructions for the intended material and for changing between dry and wet pickup. Do not assume a dry filter or bag stays appropriate for liquid collection. Observe restrictions on hot material, flammable liquids and prohibited dusts rather than describing every wet/dry vacuum as universal.
Check replacement filters, bags, seals and their exact part compatibility. Plan how collected material will be emptied and disposed of under its applicable requirements. Avoid treating a cleaner-looking bin dump as proof of safe dust containment.
Check the battery and working layout
If you already own a supported battery platform, confirm the permitted pack and charger rather than assuming any battery from that brand works. Compare the complete current cost, including a battery, charger and required collection accessories. Tool-only price is not a ready-to-use system price.
Measure the storage arrangement and the hose reach around the actual bench or work area. Advertised tank volume is not a promise of usable capacity for every filter, bag or liquid configuration. Runtime also depends on pack, mode, condition and load; we have not measured a session length for these candidates.
Keep household cleaning claims in their proper scope
The previous shortlist’s Dyson V15 Detect, Shark Detect Pro, Tineco Pure One S15 and Samsung Bespoke Jet were household-vacuum examples. Their ordinary floor-cleaning features did not support our workshop-dust rankings, so this guide does not recommend them for that purpose.
The suitable workshop purchase starts with permitted material and task, then a fitting filter, collection setup, battery and service routine. If a model’s instructions or required controls do not support the application, a convenient cordless format cannot resolve that mismatch.
