A workshop wet/dry vacuum is built to collect dry debris and liquid into a tank. Hard-floor washer-vacuums and steam cleaners solve different jobs and should not be ranked as shop vacuums. The previous article mixed those categories; this version replaces them with current purpose-built machines.

Quick picks

Pick Best for Main trade-off
RIDGID HD1200 General corded workshop cleanup Full 12-gallon machines take storage space
DEWALT DXV12P Long-reach corded cleanup Large tank is cumbersome on stairs
DEWALT DCV517B Small cordless wet or dry pickup Half-gallon capacity; battery sold separately

How we chose

We required a current manufacturer listing on September 11, 2026 and genuine wet/dry collection. We compared tank capacity, hose diameter and reach, cord or battery system, drain, filter supplied, included nozzles, wheel layout, storage, and parts support. Peak horsepower is not a cross-brand performance test.

RIDGID HD1200: best general workshop value

RIDGID’s current 12-gallon NXT line is designed for ordinary wet and dry workshop debris, with a locking hose, accessory attachments, a general-debris filter, and a tank drain. It is the sensible baseline when portability matters less than capacity.

DEWALT DXV12P: best for cord and storage organization

DEWALT specifies a 12-gallon tank, 20-foot cord, built-in drain, blower port, reusable cartridge filter, bag, and onboard accessory storage. The long cord can reduce extension-lead use around a shop.

DEWALT DCV517B: best small cordless pickup

The DCV517B is a half-gallon 20V MAX portable wet/dry vacuum with a washable HEPA wet/dry filter and two pickup modes. It is useful for benches, vehicles, and small spills, not as a substitute for a wheeled 12-gallon machine. Battery and charger are sold separately.

Safety and ownership checks

  • Follow the manual when changing between dry and wet pickup; filter requirements vary.
  • Never collect hot ash, flammable liquid, solvent vapor, or combustible dust unless the exact machine is rated for it.
  • Use suitable dust extraction for hazardous fine dust; a general shop vac is not automatically compliant.
  • Compare hose and nozzle availability, not just tank size.
  • Empty liquids promptly and dry the tank and hose to control odor.

Verdict

RIDGID HD1200 is the straightforward full-size workshop choice, DXV12P is the reach-and-storage alternative, and DCV517B is a compact secondary vacuum for small jobs.
